Swiss Economics has analysed the economic and social significance of EVZ Zug (EVZ). In addition to the economic effect, the study focussed in particular on the importance of the EVZ for the image of the Canton of Zug and the life satisfaction of the population.

An input-output analysis shows that the EVZ generates added value of CHF 42 million and 237 full-time jobs in the canton. However, the impact of the Evz on the Zug region is not limited to the economic aspects. Non-monetary effects can also be identified, but these are difficult to quantify. Stakeholder interviews revealed (for example) that, on the one hand, the EVZ creates a sense of identification and acts as a ‘social glue’. On the other hand, the EVZ also contributes to a positive image of the Canton of Zug in the rest of Switzerland.

Finally, the study analyses the effect of the EVZ and the new stadium project on the life satisfaction of the population in the canton. Firstly, it is shown that the renovation or construction of a new stadium is suitable for ensuring the long-term success of an ice hockey club. Then, using data from the Swiss household panel, we analyse whether the success of the ice hockey club increases life satisfaction regionally. We find that the population is on average more satisfied when the local ice hockey club is successful than when it is unsuccessful. The success of the regional ice hockey team therefore has a measurable effect on the well-being of people in the canton of Zug.
