On 12 August 2020, the London-based international media group Liberty Global announced its intention to acquire Sunrise. Liberty Global submitted an offer of CHF 110 per share to Sunrise shareholders, which corresponds to a total value of CHF 6.8 billion. On 30 October, COMCO unconditionally approved the proposed merger. Swiss Economics supported Sunrise in the Liberty Global | Sunrise merger project in close cooperation with the law firm Lenz & Staehelin.
Swiss Economics already successfully supported Sunrise in the reverse transaction in last year's merger control proceedings. At that time, COMCO had already cleared the merger unconditionally after an in-depth review. However, the majority of shareholders subsequently rejected the takeover. After re-examination, COMCO came to the conclusion that the market conditions have remained largely unchanged since then.
The competition team at Swiss Economics provided Sunrise with economic advice. Thanks to its many years of experience in the telecommunications sector, Swiss Economics was able to optimise the data preparation and economic analysis for the merger process.
