In the research project SVI 2014/007 ‘Shared Economy and Transport in Switzerland’, we are working with the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts to investigate the transport effects of new sharing services. Previous studies in other countries show different effects. On the one hand, positive effects have been identified: e.g. through CO2 reduction, reduction of motorised private transport by not owning a car, modal split shift in favour of public transport. On the other hand, negative effects such as switching from public transport and cycling to the car or increased traffic due to falling prices can also be demonstrated. It is also unclear to what extent people's mobility behaviour will change as a result of new sharing approaches.
Methods
- Broad-based market analysis of various sharing approaches including systematisation
- Derivation of the traffic effects for nine sharing approaches (bike sharing, station-based car sharing, free-floating car sharing, peer-to-peer car sharing, ride selling, ride sharing, car park sharing, accommodation sharing and content sharing)
- In-depth analysis of two sharing approaches (free-floating car sharing) using SWOT analysis and discrete choice experiments
- Derivation of recommendations for action
